Here's how I got GWT 1.7 Hosted Mode to work on my 64 bit Ubuntu Karmic Koala 9.10 laptop. These instructions should also work on Jaunty (9.04)

  1. Install ia32-sun-java6-bin:
    1. sudo apt-get install ia32-sun-java6-bin
    sudo apt-get install ia32-sun-java6-bin
  2. Make sure the default Java installation remains the 64 bit one
    1. sudo update-java-alternatives --set java-6-sun
    sudo update-java-alternatives --set java-6-sun
  3. Download libstdc++5 for IA32 from Jaunty repos:
  4. Extract the file
    1. dpkg-deb --fsys-tarfile libstdc++5_3.3.6-17ubuntu1_i386.deb | tar -O --extract './usr/lib/' >
    dpkg-deb --fsys-tarfile libstdc++5_3.3.6-17ubuntu1_i386.deb  | tar -O --extract './usr/lib/' >
  5. Move the extracted file to /usr/lib32
    1. sudo mv /usr/lib32
    sudo mv /usr/lib32
  6. Run
    1. sudo ldconfig
    sudo ldconfig
